Welcome to the Calgary Diocesan Council of Development and Peace
- International Development Agency for the Canadian Catholic Church
- Inspired by the Gospel values, particularly “the preferential option
for the poor”.
- Goals of DEVELOPMENT and PEACE are:
- To support initiatives by Third World people to take control of their
lives
- To educate Canadians about the North-South issues.
- Our education, advocacy and fund raising work here at home is carried
out by DEVELOPMENT and PEACE members from coast to coast.
- During the past 36 years DEVELOPMENT and PEACE has provided $425 million
to finance 13,600 community based projects in 70 countries in Africa, Asia,
and Latin America; $83 million of this amount has been allocated in emergency
aid.
- Typical projects involve issues such as peace-building, human rights,
agrarian reform, education, community development and economic justice.
- Canada - D&P brings awareness to Canadians through National campaigns,
that focus on issues that threaten the lives and the livelihood of people
in the South (e.g. Water)
- Abroad - we focus our work on issues of justice and the dignity and worth
of the human person. Funds are used for job training, environmental protection,
community health care or electoral reform (Nigeria).
- Each project is designed to help people become more self sufficient.
The projects build leadership and help people become more self sufficient
and help people to build better lives.
- In Fiscal year 2002-2003, DEVELOPMENT and PEACE financed 356 programs
and projects. Of these, 45 involved emergency aid for natural disasters
(e.g. Floods and earthquakes) or man made problems (e.g. war and civil
disturbances).
- The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) helps to finance
the work of DEVELOPMENT and PEACE. The DEVELOPMENT and PEACE budget in
2002-2003 was 24.7 million.
- DEVELOPMENT and PEACE is a member of two world-wide networks of Catholic
organizations for international development and emergency aid - Caritas
Internationalis and CIDSE.
